Amazon Introduces DRM Free E Books, Expands Reader Freedom

New Policy Change Starts January 20, 2026

Amazon has updated its Kindle store policy, set to take effect on January 20, 2026. The change gives authors and publishers the option to offer DRM free e books, allowing readers more flexibility in how they access digital content.

What DRM Means for E Books

Digital Rights Management, commonly known as DRM, is a system used to protect digital books from copying or unauthorized use. Traditionally, e books purchased on Kindle or Kobo are locked to their respective platforms, meaning a Kindle book could only be read on Kindle devices or apps.

Kindle Books Limited to Devices Until Now

Under the old system, readers who bought books on Kindle could not transfer them to other e readers like Kobo. This restriction has long been one of the biggest challenges in digital reading, limiting cross device compatibility.

DRM Free Option Now Available for Authors

With the new update, Amazon is giving publishers and independent authors the choice to release books without DRM protection. This means their books can be downloaded in formats like EPUB or PDF, making them usable on a wider range of devices.

What DRM Free E Books Allow Readers to Do

If an author selects the DRM free option, readers may be able to download files, transfer them to other devices, and read them on different e-readers, including non Kindle devices. This adds more flexibility compared to the traditional locked format.

No Change for Existing Purchased Books

Amazon has clarified that this update only applies to future downloads. Books already purchased or downloaded under the old system will remain unchanged and will still follow their original DRM restrictions.

Authors Must Opt In to the New System

The shift to DRM free publishing is not automatic. Authors and publishers must choose to enable it for each title. This means not all Kindle books will immediately become DRM free.

How Readers Can Identify DRM Free Books

Amazon has not yet made it easy to identify DRM free books at first glance. In some cases, users may see an option like “Download available in additional formats” in their content library, where EPUB or PDF downloads can be accessed.

Downloading and Transferring Files

Once downloaded in EPUB or PDF format, readers can move the file to other devices and read it outside the Kindle ecosystem. This process allows greater control over purchased content.

Gradual Shift in Digital Reading

While the change opens the door for more open access reading, it depends on how many publishers choose to adopt it. The transition is expected to happen gradually rather than immediately across all Kindle titles.
