Sometimes it starts with a laugh, a nickname and a teacher who genuinely loves her students. That is exactly how Caitlann Butler, a music teacher at Plainview Classical Academy, ended up writing her very first children’s book.

Butler has always been the kind of teacher who makes her classroom feel warm and fun. She gives students nicknames, she comes up with little rhymes and she finds small ways to make kids smile every single day. So when a girl named Magaly walked into her music room Butler did what she always does. She found a rhyme. Golly Magaly. It just rolled off the tongue and it stuck.

What started as a cheerful greeting between a teacher and her student slowly grew into something much bigger than either of them expected.

She Had the Idea She Just Needed the Courage

Butler will tell you herself that her brain never really stops. Song lyrics, poem ideas and creative thoughts come to her constantly. She had been carrying the idea for this book in her head for a while, turning it over playing with the words seeing how the story could come together.

Every time she saw Magaly in the hallway she would say it again. Golly Magaly. And one day she just decided enough thinking. It was time to actually write it.

The story she came up with follows young Magaly as she finds different items left behind on the school playground. The twist is that none of those items belong there. Each one belongs to a specific room inside the school. The music room. The art room. The gym. The lunchroom. The classroom. It is a simple and clever idea that feels very familiar to any child who has spent time walking the halls of a school.

She Knew Exactly Who Should Illustrate It

Once the manuscript was done Butler faced the next big decision. Who was going to bring these pages to life visually. She did not have to think long. The answer was already sitting in one of her classrooms.

Brooke Ahrens is a seventh grade student at PCA and in Butler’s eyes one of the most naturally gifted young artists she has come across. Her work has a quality that is hard to teach. It feels real and playful and full of life. Bright colors bold lines a cartoon style that feels both fun and genuine. Butler knew the moment she finished writing that Brooke was the only person she wanted for this.

What makes this even more special is that Brooke was not just a helper on this project. She was the sole illustrator. Every single image in the book came from her hands.

Brooke Did Not Want It to Just Be Good

When Brooke took on the project she made a quiet promise to herself. She was not going to settle and she wanted every page to be the best it could possibly be not just good enough but genuinely great.

She will tell you that the hardest part was not drawing the characters or picking the colors. The hardest part was looking at a finished page and deciding it was truly done. She held herself to a standard that honestly most adults struggle to reach. She wanted the book to hit its full potential and she was not going to stop until it did.

For someone in seventh grade that kind of mindset is rare and it shows in every page of Golly Magaly.

Holding the Book for the First Time

Both Butler and Brooke agree that nothing quite prepared them for the moment they held a physical copy of the finished book.

For Brooke it was her first published work. She had spent weeks putting her heart into those illustrations and suddenly it was all real. A real book with her artwork inside it sitting right there in her hands. She described it as watching the pages slowly come to life and said she was genuinely glad she said yes to the whole thing.

For Butler watching one of her students shine in a creative space outside of traditional academics was one of those moments that reminds you exactly why teaching matters. She said she hopes every teacher and every person with a creative idea finds the courage to take that step and put something real into the world.

From Manuscript to Amazon in Two Weeks

The timeline from final edits to the published book was surprisingly quick. Golly Magaly went from finished manuscript to live on Amazon in roughly two weeks landing on the platform on April 28.

The book is written for children between the ages of 3 and 8. It uses rhyming language throughout and quietly teaches kids about days of the week colors and the different spaces inside a school. It is the kind of book that feels fun to read out loud which is exactly what Butler intended.

The response since publication has been genuinely touching. Family members living far away were able to order it online and several of them are teachers themselves who read it to their own students before the school year ended. For Butler knowing the book was reaching classrooms beyond her own made everything feel worth it.

What Is Coming Next

Golly Magaly is not becoming a series at least not right now. But Butler is already deep into her next project. The upcoming book is called Tucker the Traveling Tortoise and it is based on a real story about a friend’s tortoise who has a habit of showing up in the most unexpected places. If the warmth and creativity behind Golly Magaly is any indication Tucker is going to be worth the wait.

As for Brooke she is not done either. Illustrating this book taught her things about responsibility, hard work and seeing something through to the end that no classroom lesson could have. She is already thinking about what comes next and the possibility of illustrating more books is very much on her mind.

Golly Magaly is available right now on Amazon. If you have a young reader at home or a classroom full of them it is exactly the kind of book that makes storytime feel special again.

Let’s turn simple ideas into magical children’s books.
