Leadership Change at a Leading Publishing House

Former Amazon executive Greg Greeley has taken on a new leadership role as CEO of one of the largest publishing companies in the United States. The appointment comes after the organization spent approximately six months searching for a new chief executive following a major leadership transition.

Departure of the Previous CEO and the Interim Period

The position became vacant after Jonathan Karp stepped down as CEO of Simon & Schuster. Karp left the role with plans to focus on launching his own imprint, Simon Six. Although he announced his departure earlier, he continued serving in the position temporarily until a suitable replacement was found.

Why Greg Greeley Was Selected

According to Simon & Schuster Board Chairman Richard Sarnoff, Greeley’s extensive background in global digital publishing and technology played a key role in his selection. The company aims to strengthen its international presence, and Greeley’s experience was seen as a strong fit for that strategy.

Amazon Career and Industry Impact

Greeley spent nearly two decades at Amazon, where he held several senior leadership positions. During his tenure, he contributed to the development of major initiatives such as self-publishing tools, print-on-demand services, and global audiobook expansion. He also helped launch reader engagement programs like First Reads and Prime Reading, which significantly influenced digital reading habits worldwide.

Experience Beyond Amazon

After leaving Amazon in 2018, Greeley joined Airbnb as President of its Homes division. Despite moving into a different industry, he maintained a strong connection to the digital content and consumer experience space, which aligns with his new publishing leadership role.

Transition for Jonathan Karp and Simon Six

Jonathan Karp has now fully transitioned to focus on Simon Six, a new imprint under Simon & Schuster. The imprint is expected to publish a limited number of books annually, with its first release scheduled for May 2026. One of the upcoming titles is Take Me To Your Leader: Perspectives on Your First Alien Encounter by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Future Outlook for Simon & Schuster

The leadership change comes at a time when Simon & Schuster’s parent company, KKR. It is reportedly considering strategic options, including a potential sale. Despite this, the firm is currently focused on long-term growth and international expansion under its new leadership structure.
