Amazon Signs Multi-Year Book and Podcast Deal with Oprah Winfrey

Amazon Secures Rights to Oprah Winfrey Show Archives in New Agreement

Amazon has entered into a multi-year licensing agreement with Oprah Winfrey, marking a major step in its expansion into premium digital content. As part of this partnership, Winfrey will produce two video podcast episodes each week starting this summer. The agreement also includes the development of special programming centered around her well-known “Favorite Things” and “Book Club” brands. In addition, Amazon will gain access to and repurpose the full 25-season archive of The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Focus on Expanding Video Podcast Content

This collaboration reflects Amazon’s growing interest in video podcasts as a key content format. The scope of this deal is comparable to Amazon’s previous high-value agreement signed in 2024 with Jason and Travis Kelce for their podcast “New Heights.” By bringing Oprah Winfrey’s influential voice into its ecosystem, Amazon aims to strengthen its position in the evolving digital media landscape.

Leadership Perspective on the Deal

Steve Boom, Amazon’s Vice President of Audio, Twitch, and Games, emphasized the importance of the partnership. He noted that Oprah Winfrey has created one of the most recognizable and enduring global brands, spanning television, publishing, and beyond. According to Boom, this collaboration will allow Amazon to extend its reach and offer audiences new ways to engage with its content across its platforms.

Oprah Winfrey’s Vision for the Podcast

Oprah Winfrey shared her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting her commitment to meaningful storytelling. She explained that the podcast will continue her mission of opening conversations that matter, while also reaching a broader international audience. Through this expansion, she aims to connect with viewers in ways that encourage deeper understanding and fresh perspectives.

Multi-Platform Distribution Strategy

Starting in July, Winfrey’s video podcasts will be distributed across Amazon’s wide range of services. These include Prime Video, Amazon Music, Fire TV Channels, and Audible. This multi-platform approach ensures maximum visibility and accessibility, allowing audiences to engage with content across different devices and formats.

Business Structure and Revenue Model

The agreement includes a revenue-sharing model between Amazon and Winfrey’s Harpo Entertainment. Income generated from advertising and sales will be distributed between both parties, reflecting a collaborative financial structure designed to benefit from the content’s commercial success.

Expansion of Existing Media Ventures

In recent years, Winfrey has explored podcasting on her YouTube channel, while also working on other major projects, such as producing the film The Color Purple. This new deal with Amazon represents a more structured and large-scale approach to her presence in digital media.

Additional Developments and Future Plans

The partnership comes shortly after Amazon restructured its podcast division, splitting Wondery into two separate entities. Alongside the new content initiatives, Amazon also plans to promote Oprah’s iconic Book Club, which is set to celebrate its 30th anniversary in September.
