Pop Market Weekend Brings Free Comics and Local Creators to Elmira Heights
Community Event Held at American Legion
The Elmira Heights American Legion hosted a Pop Market weekend event that attracted comic book fans, collectors, and families. Visitors had the opportunity to receive free comic books, meet creators, and explore a wide range of pop culture items.
Local Businesses and Creators Showcased
More than 20 local vendors and creators participated in the event. Attendees were able to purchase trading cards, action figures, books, and other collectibles while engaging directly with independent artists and small businesses.
Encouraging Creativity and Reading Among Youth
Organizers designed the Pop Market to bring together comic books, trading card culture, and creative talent in one space for the public. The goal was to encourage reading, creativity, and offline activities, especially for younger audiences.
Focus on Reducing Screen Time
Event organizer Jared Aiosa highlighted the purpose of the gathering, explaining that it was intended to promote creative engagement and reduce excessive phone usage, such as endless scrolling on social media. The event aimed to inspire more hands-on and imaginative activities.
Creators Connect with Readers
Several attending creators have published their own comic books and illustrated stories featuring superheroes and other characters. Artist Doogie Horner shared that meeting young readers is especially rewarding, as children often discuss their own creative ideas and ask engaging questions.
Industry Professionals Join the Event
DC Comics illustrator V Ken Marion also attended the Pop Market, sharing his experience interacting with fans. Originally from upstate New York, he noted that returning to the region after many years made the experience especially meaningful.
Free Comic Book Distribution and Activities
Organizers confirmed that hundreds of comic books were distributed for free during the weekend. The event also included a raffle, with proceeds supporting the Chemung County S.P.C.A., adding a charitable element to the gathering.
Event Schedule Details
The Pop Market ran from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 2 and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 3, offering two full days of activities for attendees.
