Decatur to Host Annual Children’s Book Festival on May 2–3

Decatur, Georgia, is set to welcome families and young readers for its annual Children’s Book Festival, organized by Little Shop of Stories. The event will take place on May 2 and 3 at the Decatur Library located on Sycamore Street.

The festival will showcase a wide range of children’s literature, including picture books, middle-grade novels, graphic novels, and young adult fiction. The event aims to celebrate reading culture and encourage literary engagement among young audiences.

In addition to book-related activities, the festival will include a Sunday parade beginning at Decatur Fire Station No. 1. Authors will also visit local schools, offering students opportunities to interact directly with writers and illustrators.

Relationship with Decatur Arts Festival

Traditionally, the Children’s Book Festival is held alongside the Decatur Arts Festival. However, the arts festival is on pause this year, leading organizers to continue the book festival independently while maintaining its growth and community focus.

Diane Capriola, co-owner of Little Shop of Stories, highlighted the importance of continuing the event despite changes in the larger festival calendar. She expressed gratitude for partnerships with the Georgia Center for the Book and the Decatur Library, noting that the goal is to build on last year’s success and strengthen this growing tradition.

Long Standing Role of Little Shop of Stories

Since its establishment in 2005, Little Shop of Stories has become a nationally recognized independent children’s bookstore. It is known for its strong event programming, collaborations with schools and community organizations, and the hosting of prominent authors and illustrators.

The festival is supported by several organizations, including the Georgia Center for the Book. Decatur Arts Alliance, Decatur Tourism Bureau, Lenz Marketing, DeKalb Library Foundation, Bellwood Coffee, Butter & Cream, and Lucky Rabbit Publishing. These partnerships help expand the festival’s reach and community impact.

Future Plans for Collaboration

Organizers have also shared that they look forward to reuniting with the Decatur Arts Festival in 2027, further strengthening cultural events in the region.
