Taiwan Travelogue Wins 2026 International Booker Prize
The 2026 International Booker Prize was awarded on May 19 to Taiwan Travelogue. This marks a historic moment as the first winning book translated from Mandarin Chinese. The recognition adds to the growing global reach of translated literature and highlights the strength of works emerging from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
And Other Stories Marks Back to Back Booker Success
The win also confirms the rising reputation of Sheffield based And Other Stories. Following last year’s victory with Heart Lamp translated from Kannada the publisher has now achieved two consecutive International Booker wins. This rare achievement has placed the independent press in a strong position within global literary publishing.
Publisher Celebrates Recognition Beyond Awards Season
Earlier in May the press also received the Small Press of the Year award at the British Book Awards. These back to back achievements reflect a strong period for the publisher and reinforce its focus on translated fiction and bold editorial choices.
Stefan Tobler on Choosing Literature Without Fear
Stefan Tobler shared that he first noticed Taiwan Travelogue after its recognition in the United States. He emphasized the importance of supporting works where translators receive full credit. He described the book as layered, thoughtful and deeply engaging with themes of class culture and human relationships.
Independent Publishing Built on Creative Risk
Tobler explained that And Other Stories was founded in 2010 to publish books that larger houses often overlook. He said independent publishing allows greater freedom to follow instinct rather than commercial pressure. This approach has helped the press remain committed to meaningful storytelling even with limited resources.
Growth of Northern Independent Publishing Movement
He also highlighted the role of independent publishers outside London in shaping a more balanced UK publishing landscape. The Northern Fiction Alliance formed in 2016 helped strengthen collaboration among small presses and supported the growth of regional publishing voices.
Booker Recognition Expands Publishing Opportunities
According to Tobler the first International Booker win significantly boosted sales and visibility across the UK and Europe. The second win is expected to further strengthen financial stability allowing the press to take more creative risks and support ambitious literary projects.
Future Plans and Global Literary Expansion
Looking ahead And Other Stories plans to expand its catalogue with international voices including authors from Brazil, Palestine Mexico and Norway. The publisher will also continue to release a limited number of carefully selected books each year while maintaining its focus on quality over quantity.
Commitment to Translated Literature and Literary Diversity
Tobler concluded that the recognition from the Booker Prize validates the publisher’s long term commitment to translated fiction. He emphasized the importance of bringing global literature to wider audiences and supporting translators as essential contributors to literary culture.
